Hand-Dyed Wool Rug: Primitive Folk Art Star Spangled Whale by Mavis Butterfield

This star spangled whale rug measures 58 3/4" x 36 1/2". I designed and hooked this rug using all hand dyed wool.

A combination of antique black hand dyed wool was used for the Mama and baby whales. I used nautical blues for the sea, a wonderful mix of muted baby blues for the sky and dirty lamb colors for the stars.

The flag was hooked with my favorite flag rug and cadet blue combination.

This star spangled whale rug was an absolute joy to hook . The background is linen. All wools were hand dyed by myself in my New England home studio.

A true primitive piece of folk art.
